My name is DeAnna Witham, Owner of Trinity Hot Yoga, and this is my yoga story:
Back in '93, I reluctantly joined a friend for my very first yoga class. As a former college athlete, I thought I was pretty fit and doubted whether yoga could offer me much of a challenge.
That first class was a heated hatha session, lasting a grueling 60 minutes. The instructor's opening words, "no matter how you feel, do your best to stay in the room," almost made me chuckle at the melodrama. Yet, by the end of the session, I was utterly spent. I'd never felt so physically drained in my life.
Thankfully, there was a "buy a first class and receive the second free" offer, or I might never have returned.
Surprisingly, the second class had me hooked. I kept up with yoga for about two years until life took over—I had kids, a new job, and other priorities.
Fast forward 15 years. My life was chaotic—I had two kids, a demanding job, and financial struggles. I'd also put on a significant amount of weight, reaching 267 pounds. I didn't even recognize myself anymore, and exercise was a distant memory.
At my husband's suggestion, I mustered up the courage to give hot yoga another try. I approached the desk of a local bikram studio, embarrassed, and blurted out, "I don’t know if my body can physically do this." The petite receptionist responded with kindness, placing a statue of a plump yogi on the counter and saying, “Yoga is for EVERY BODY.” Her reassurance touched me, and I entered the studio.
That 90-minute class turned out to be an emotional journey. Sweating and red-faced, I pushed through, feeling a sense of pride in my efforts. I continued attending classes three times a week for the next three years.
Eventually, a studio opened closer to my home, which felt like a second family. I became one of their earliest members, attending classes 3-5 times a week. Over time, I shed 85 pounds, gained strength and confidence, and, most importantly, learned to love myself.
Yoga class became more than just a workout; it was a sanctuary where I could look at myself in the mirror for an hour and make positive affirmations. It taught me gratitude for my body and its abilities, guiding my mind towards self-acceptance and appreciation for the beautiful vessel that is my body.
Since relocating to Tri Cities three years ago, I've felt a deep desire to pay forward the gifts I've received from yoga. I believe that everyone has their own unique gifts to offer the world, but without self-acceptance and love, we're unable to fully share those gifts. My goal now is to help others discover their potential through the transformative practice of yoga and self-acceptance.
